Apple Sauce Recipe
In fall apples come into season. Favorite foods at this time of year include apple pie, apple crisp and caramel apples. Since they are in season, apples have also found their way into autumn games such as bobbing for apples.
However, if you live in a place with a surplus of apples, you might
find yourself with more than you can eat at once. While they are known
for their longevity, apples will not keep forever. You could give some
of them away, but for storing apples long term, a good apple sauce recipe might just do the trick.
Apple sauce is quite versatile. It can be eaten plain, as in the United States, or used to give other food a little kick, as in other countries. For example, in Germany or Sweden, apple sauce is often eaten with meat, to help moisten it and make it more palatable and healthy.
The following apple sauce recipe can be a great addition to any cookbook. You'll need:
Three to four pounds of apples
Four strips of lemon peel
Three to four tablespoons of lemon juice (about one lemon)
Three inches of cinnamon stick
One fourth cup brown sugar
One fourth cup white sugar (optional)
One cup of water
One half teaspoon salt
Peel,
core and quarter apples. Combine everything in a large stockpot, cover
and simmer for about 25 minutes. Remove from heat, remove cinnamon
sticks and lemon peels, and mash with a potato masher. Although this
apple sauce recipe doesn't require canning like some do, it can be
frozen for up to a year.
