Banana Cream Pie
Banana cream pie is probably the most well known pie among pies that
are not eaten. Ever since the Three Stooges first tossed one of these
whipped cream topped wonders, banana cream pie has been most well known
for its effectiveness as a projectile over its quality as a dessert.
Other pies, such as dutch apple pie or pecan pie are much more
dignified. While these pies are likely to be spotted behaving themselves at a
Thanksgiving dinner, you're more likely to find banana cream pie
in the air or on your face than in your mouth. Despite banana cream pie's deviance from
common culinary usage, it is quite delicious; and contrary to what you
might see on your favorite comedy show, eating one is, in fact, quite a
good idea.
To make your very own banana cream pie (either to eat or throw at people) you will need:
One baked pie crust or graham cracker crust
Three fourths cup sugar
One half cup flour
One fourth teaspoon salt
Three cups milk
Three egg yolks
Two tablespoons butter
One teaspoon vanilla
Two bananas
Combine sugar, salt and flour in a saucepan, add milk over low heat. Stir all ingredients continuously
when adding them. Add egg yolks. Stir three minutes. Remove from heat,
and add butter and vanilla. Cool 15 minutes and pour into crust. Chill
in refrigerator for at least four hours. Top with banana slices and
whipped cream before serving or tossing at a clown.
Delicious variations include adding strawberries to the crust before adding the custard. Rum extract or banana extract can be added to the custard to give the pie an extra kick (and make licking it off of faces more enjoyable).
